At St. John School we are committed to providing our students with learning opportunities ‘beyond the classroom' that promote physical fitness, a curiosity about our natural environment, survival skills, social engagement and self-esteem. Living in Northwestern Ontario, we understand the importance our geography plays on childhood development and our community as a whole. We encourage students to take advantage of this incredible area we call home.

In Kindergarten children at St. John School take part in our new Forest and Nature School Program. We've partnered with FIREFLY's Melanie Ewen, Counsellor and certified Child and Nature Alliance of Canada facilitator to bring the program to the school.

Every Tuesday for half a day students head out into the forest and test their boundaries and problem-solving skills. The natural environment provides ample opportunities for the children to challenge themselves as they explore the forest. They may slide down an embankment, shimmy across a fallen log four feet off the ground, examine deer scat or figure out how to climb up a steep, slippery hill.

In June, Grade 5 and 6 students participate in a retreat to Luther Village. Students get to participate in swimming, arts, music, archery, campfires, hiking, rock climbing, zip lining, sports, games, group activities and so much more.
