The Student Well-Being Coaches at St. John School offer a variety of in-class mental health programming throughout kindergarten to grade 8. One of the programs that the grade 6-8 classes participated in, was Stress Lessons. The aim of this resource is to introduce stress management strategies and provide students with opportunities and specific skills that will foster their social and emotional competence, resilience and well-being.
The Chill Fair held during Mental Health Week, was an opportunity for the students to creatively share information and ideas about what they had learned throughout their lessons. Students decided on a topic that was of interest to them, and had the choice to work in groups or individually. Students created display boards, slideshows, and created visual representations of your brain on stress. Many students went above and beyond searching for resources and tip sheets for individuals who attended their presentation.
They had a fantastic turnout of parents, siblings, grandparents, and community members. Each class within the school attended the chill fair, and enjoyed making their own fidgets and stress balls, using a variety of art supplies, trying samples of healthy foods, and learning about new techniques to manage stress!
The feedback from those who attended was positive. They received many comments about how knowledgeable and professional the presentations were. Mayn adults said they actually learned a lot about how to effectively manage their own stress. When younger students were asked about what topics they liked best, one student said “ every single thing was amazing- I liked it all”.
This was a team effort, from both staff and students, The students worked very hard, with so much work and dedication put into their topics.
