First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education

Dancers begin moving around the drum at a pow wow at St. Thomas Aquinas

At St. John School we recognize that we live on Treaty #3 Traditional Territory. We strongly believe that it is important children understand and appreciate the culture, traditions and language of the Treaty #3 First Nations and Métis and we are proud to offer a variety of programs in our schools.

Our school offers the North Studies program, which sees students explore traditions and activities of First Nation, Métis and Inuit people of our region with hands-on learning opportunities. The program is a collaboration between our school and the Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre. The program helps develop an understanding of the cultural significance in our area, helping to shape and build bonds and relationships with all peoples of all nations, all while learning the basics of the Ojibway language.

We also offer Ojibway language instruction in Kindergarten and it is imbedded in our Northern Studies program. We believe Ojibway is something that should be cherished and taught to future generations.

Finally, we are honoured to host a Spring and Fall Feast each year that celebrates the changing of the season. Each feast features traditional drumming, dancing, food and prayer.
