Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 at St. John School are proving that creativity has no age limit.

As part of their Media Literacy unit, young learners explored the exciting world of digital media, discovering how messages are created and shared. Through hands-on activities and discussions, students learned how media texts communicate powerful ideas to specific audiences, and how elements like colour, images, and words can influence thoughts and feelings.

Bringing their learning to life, students applied these concepts in a meaningful and impactful way - by designing their own anti-bullying T-shirts in celebration of Pink Shirt Day. Each design reflected careful thought and creativity, with students using their voices to promote kindness, inclusion, and respect.

The project, led by educator Lisa Dumontier, highlighted not only students’ growing understanding of media, but also their ability to use it as a tool for positive change.

This initiative also connected deeply with Catholic virtues, encouraging students to live out compassion, respect, and love for others in tangible ways. Through their creative efforts, these young learners demonstrated that even the smallest actions can help build a more caring and inclusive community.

At St. John School, students aren’t just learning about media - they’re becoming thoughtful creators, using their ideas to make a difference.
