St. John School (SJS) is leading an inspiring initiative to integrate the 7 Grandfather Teachings into leadership activities, creating a school culture rooted in inclusivity, respect, and shared values. This initiative is especially meaningful, as 56% of the student population identifies as First Nations, Métis, or Inuit (FNMI). By phasing out the previous Leader in Me program, the school is weaving the Grandfather Teachings into its leadership framework, aligning them seamlessly with Catholic Values and Virtues.

A Stronger Sense of Belonging
SJS has seen remarkable growth in students' sense of belonging and community through this initiative. Monthly assemblies celebrate the teachings, recognizing students who embody them in their daily lives. Awards, voted on by two-thirds of the student body to continue this year, are presented to honour these contributions.

“By integrating the Grandfather Teachings, we’ve created a shared language and a sense of pride that is felt throughout our school,” said Principal Corinna Glazier. “It’s incredible to see how these teachings have strengthened our community and empowered students to take part in shaping the culture of St. John School.”

Leadership in Action
The Grandfather Teachings come to life through school-wide projects and activities. Highlights include:

• Collaborative Art Project: Students worked together on a piece featuring eagle wings, using feathers designed by every student with a template gifted by artist Patrick Hunter. The artwork now hangs proudly in the Native Language classroom.
• Bulletin Board Displays: Each month, students contribute to a new display in the front entrance, celebrating the teachings.
• Student Summits: Monthly mixed-grade activities offer opportunities to reflect and celebrate the teachings together.
• Prayer and Announcements: Teachings are integrated into prayer services and morning announcements, including Native language words that reinforce cultural understanding.

Student and Family Impact
The integration of the Grandfather Teachings has fostered a stronger sense of pride among students and staff. Families have expressed appreciation for the explicit instruction and visibility of these teachings throughout the school. Social media posts sharing the initiative have generated positive feedback and engagement.

“Students feel more connected and engaged when they see their culture reflected in daily life at school,” said Glazier. “This initiative has brought our school community closer and encouraged greater participation in school-wide activities.”

Looking Ahead
SJS plans to deepen its integration of the Grandfather Teachings by reaching out to local knowledge keepers, families, and community organizations to further expand resources and learning opportunities. The school also aims to strengthen connections between the teachings and Catholic Values and Virtues, continuing its whole-school focus on cultural understanding and leadership development.

This initiative demonstrates how St. John School is creating a meaningful, inclusive leadership framework that honours cultural teachings, fosters pride, and supports a stronger sense of community.
